Fridge repairs can be expensive. Check a few simple things yourself before calling out a fridge repair technician. Some of the items may seem ridiculously obvious, however people still get caught out red faced when they have not checked the simple things. Electrical Safety – Always, always, always disconnect power before commencing work. For more on electrical safety go to our electrical safety page. Fridge repair tip #1 – Light Out Almost all fridges do not have fuses. Check the easiest things first, is the globe blown? Does the power outlet work? Plug in an item you know works and test that. If there is power to the fridge and the globe is okay it is most likely a faulty door switch for the light. Fridge repair tip #2 – Broken door seals. Broken fridge door seals cause an increase in power consumption, condensation to drip on food, and food to perish prematurely. To keep your seals in good condition and extend their life clean them regularly. To read more about fridge door seals go to www.fridgedoorseals.com.au. The common cause for a door seal tearing is a sticky fluid has been spilt, and not cleaned off immediately. These fluids are usually drinks, such as a dripping wine cask, a leaking juice container or a defrosting ice block. When these sticky substances are not cleaned off immediately they pull on the door seal each time the door is opened until eventually the seal is weakened enough to tear.
