Washing machine repair checklist

Washing machine is probably one of the most used and abused appliances in most households. But with the correct care a washing machine can give you reasonably trouble free service.

Some of the items may seem ridiculously obvious, however people still get caught out red faced when they have not checked the simple things.

Electrical Safety – Always, always, always disconnect power before commencing work. For more on electrical safety go to our safety electrical page.

Washing machine repair tip #1 – Switch off power and water when not in use

By turning off the water this reduces the pressure on the inlet hoses when the washing machine is not in use.

I could not count the number of houses I have been to over the years that have flooded due to the taps being left on. Worse still is when a hose bursts in a high rise unit. This not only affects the occupants of the unit concerned but also adjacent units and in severe cases several floors below.

Ask your insurance company the question “will my insurance cover this event.” You may be frightened by the answer.

It is becoming increasing important to turn off the power supply when the washing machine is not in use. With electronics in almost all modern machines, they become very susceptible to damage from power spikes and electrical storms. It is cheap insurance to turn the machine off rather than having to pay out for a new computer board because of an electrical surge.
